The outbreak of COVID-19 at the beginning of 2020 compelled many doctors to innovate and discover treatment protocols, based on repurposed off-label medications, aimed at preventing hospitalizations and deaths. These efforts generated case-series of successfully treated patients that constitute real world evidence. Eleftherios Gkioulekas from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley discusses his research on a statistical framework for assessing the strength of the available real world evidence, in order to facilitate an agile rapid response, should a similar situation arise with future pandemics.
